Archaeology
Archaeological sites: Shehy Highland Park is not only a haven for nature lovers but also a site of significant archaeological interest.
Recent studies made by the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society in 2009 have uncovered fascinating remnants of past human activity, including ancient booley huts, a pair of standing stones, and a bullaun stone.
The standing stones, believed to be ancient markers, offer a glimpse into the rituals and social structures of past societies.
The bullaun stone, a man-made hollow or basin in a rock outcrop, was possibly associated with a hut circle and may have served both practical and spiritual purposes.
Additionally, several hut circles have been identified with associated animal enclosures, and a quarry site, providing further insights into the lives of those who once inhabited this rugged landscape.
As you hike through the park, take a moment to ponder the rich history beneath your feet and the stories these archaeological treasures tell about the resilience and ingenuity of Ireland´s early inhabitants.
